Walk on the Wild Side

Not quite sure what to expect, I entered Jenny Wright and Christine Rebuffed-Broadus’s Experimental Jungle workshop to the strains of jungle music and pictures of wild animals on the screen.

After some fun practice drilling various acronyms, one so obscure that only Lindsay Clandfield knew it, we split into five groups, the name of each group being a component of the jungle: Tree, Lake, Lion, Snake and Quicksand. And then The Experimental Practice Jungle began. After assembling at the various labelled points in the ‘Jungle’, envelopes with activities which we should carry out awaited us. We discovered that each group name corresponded with one of the main chapters in their new e-book, Experimental Practice in ELT –  Dogme, Lexical Chunking, Corpora in the Classroom, Translation and CLIL.

Next the groups came back together to evaluate the activities for their usefulness to our students, and finally advice was given for us to try some Experimental Practice ourselves.

All in all it was a very original and creative introduction to their new e-book. And great fun.
