Autonomy in language education - the struggle against ideology and misrepresentation

Session description

Alex Ding
Barbara Sinclair

Session details:

We explore how ‘autonomy’ has been misconstrued and misrepresented in applied linguistics, and how these misrepresentations, stemming mainly from dominant critical theories in ‘progressive’ Western education, have created a gap between theory and practice which is unhelpful for practitioners and teacher educators. We suggest ways forward for autonomy which takes account of the real challenges faced by teachers.
