Update - Exeter Online

Dear all,

We’re working hard to prepare the ‘Exeter Online’ website. We should be able to make it ’public’ in a few days. Please watch this space - we’ll be publishing details shortly.

Thanks

Julian

Welcome from Marion Williams (President, IATEFL)

As the President of IATEFL. I am delighted to welcome you all to Exeter on-line. We are very excited about our new initiative, which brings our annual conference to many thousands of English language teachers around the world. Our conference is the highlight of the year for many professionals, providing them with the opportunity to make links and learn from each other. However, we are now able to bring the conference to those who are unable to attend the live event thanks to the generous funding of the British Council. You will be able to see live transmission of the plenary presentations, a live closing event, experience many of the presentations, talk to participants who are at the conference, listen to participants’ responses, and engage in an on-going discussion. Behind the scenes is a team of experienced professionals from IATEFL and The British Council who will be working throughout the conference and for many weeks before and after it to bring you a flavour of Exeter and to make this event memorable for you. I hope you find it stimulating and enjoyable.

Marion Williams (President, IATEFL).

Exeter Online Site

We’re just finishing up design work on the actual Moodle site which we will be using for the event itself. A small team of us are working on the installation and customisation of the Moodle, and getting some preliminary materials in place ready for the opening date, which is set for Wednesday 26th of March. By that time we will have our forum moderators in place and we will be ready for the rush of online participants who we expect to be registering between then and the start of the actual conference on Tuesday April 8th. Keep an eye on this blog for more information on where to find the site, and how to register and get started.

Exeter Online Update

Hi Again,

Things are getting busier here at ‘Exeter Online’ headquarters as the Annual Conference gets closer. There are just a few things I wanted to draw your attention to:

1) This blog is simply the pre-conference site and will not be the place where the actual conference takes place. As last year, the main online conference will be in an installation of Moodle, and will include a lot more than simple blog postings - we’ll have audio and video materials, diaries, photographs, participant interviews and special events and plenaries. Keep an eye on this blog for when the actual site goes live, and for information on signing up.

2) You’ll have noticed that we have put out a call for forum moderators for the actual event site. There are plenty of openings here, and we’re looking for people who are very passionate about a particular theme of our profession to moderate these forums. If you’re interested in getting more involved, please see Nik Peachey’s posting further down this blog.

3) If you are a speaker at the live conference, you’ll be hearing from me in the next few days asking you for your permission to audio (or video) record your presentation and make it available to the people ‘attending’ the conference remotely. Please read this email carefully - and give it some thought. We’re relying on all the speakers’ generosity to bring the entire conference to a wider audience and we would be very grateful if you would take the time to get involved and share your experience with this audience.

And, in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to post to this blog with your thoughts and ideas for the conference itself. We look forward to hearing from you.

Gavin

Welcome from Adrian Tennant (IATEFL Membership Chair)

My name’s Adrian Tennant and I’m the Chair of the Membership committee. My committee has two main roles. The first is to attract new members to IATEFL and the second is to look after existing members. The IATEFL Conference is an important event for members and I’m really please that we now have Exeter Online. This gives members who aren’t able to attend the conference in person to take part in a parallel event and get a feeling for what’s happening in the UK. It’s also an opportunity for new people to find out a bit more about what IATEFL is about. Through Exeter Online we are able to help link, develop and support ELT professionals throughout the world. So, welcome to Exeter Online!
