Is a good f2f trainer automatically a good online one?

Session details

Over the last few years the amount of training and development offered online had increased, with even the Cambridge Celta now moving towards online delivery. With this in mind this talk tries to pin down what the key competencies for being an online trainer are and asks if a good face-to-face trainer is automatically a good trainer online?

Structure
The talk will begin by discussing the rise of online teacher training and teacher development in the ELT world. Moving on from that it will look at the differences between taking a course f2f and online (asynchronously) , and using feedback from people taking both types of courses, highlight the perceived role of the tutor.
These will lead to looking at what teachers and training organisations consider to be the key competencies for being a face-to-face tutor and exploring the often asked question of whether a ‘good teacher’ makes a ‘good trainer’. It will then consider how much these competencies cross over into the online sphere. The proposed move of the Cambridge CELTA online has got many tutors considering if they need to change their skills set and looking for advice for working online, raising the question as to whether a good face-to-face trainer is automatically a good trainer online. So in this section of the talk, I will address some of these concerns. I will conclude by trying to identify the key competencies needed to be an online tutor.
