CLIL- Developing speaking in content by Keith Kelly, 11.45-12.45, Monday 18th April

Keith Kelly claims that there is almost no speaking component in most of the CLIL classes and gives some solutions for that.

In the session, he showed a wide variety of activities to enable students to talk more in the CLIL classes.

His first suggestion is to use concept mapping for subject-specific vocabulary by using this webpage: http://cmap.ihmc.us/conceptmap.html. On this webpage, you can create your own concept maps or download them. It will guide students into organising information and facilitating their speaking.

Other activities are gapped single/multiple responses, information searches, 20 questions, information transfer, label a diagram and talk. We tried some of the activities in the session and had really fun! For instance, in the information searches activity, students wander around the class and ask questions to their peers to find out the correct answer.

You can find his presentation on his website: www.factworld.info.

With these activities, students will be in action and speak English more as well as learn the subject-matter!
