The Joy of Storytelling - An Interview with David Heathfield
David gave a very interesting talk on storytelling which has been reviewed by my fellow roving reporter - Elizabete. David is also running an evening event on Sunday 17th from 19.30 to 21.00 and would like to welcome everyone to come along and take part either by telling stories or listening to them. During his talk he spoke about one of his students from Nigeria who felt isolated from the rest of her class and was too shy to join in a story telling evening which all the students were participating in. David decided to tell a story from Nigeria on her behalf. Later she told David that from that moment she felt included and part of the group. She felt that her culture was now recognised and celebrated by the others.
On Sunday David will be sharing stories told to him by students and teachers from different parts of the world such Turkey, the Urals, China and Japan. He would like people to come and share stories they have been told. He says that often the story may go back in time for many years - sometimes hundreds of years. I am hoping to contribute a story told to me by my father (now 85) that he was told when he was only 10 years old by an old Devonian.
Stories should be ideally about 3 minutes long and no longer than 5 minutes. I look forward to hearing everyone's stories.
