Teacher Training Unplugged: simplifying initial language teacher education - Anthony Gaughan & Izzy Orde

Some things define initial training courses: handouts, teaching practice points, paperwork, stress. It is easy to overlook the important people in the process. Come and see how we, inspired by the DOGME ELT group, have tried to put our trainee teachers - and the students they teach during teaching practice - back at the heart of the teacher training experience.

Dear Izzy and Antony,
What a pleasure to see your team at work! I really like the drama dialogues you have integrated into the workshop as well as the thought-provoking examples given, the draft papers shown, the inspiring atmosphere created.
Thank you very much and good luck to your further work.

Hi Nataly,
Thanks so much for your feedback! Really glad you enjoyed it :-)
Are you a teacher trainer? Obviously our CELTA context is quite specific but we hope that other very different teacher training contexts can also take something away from our experiences.

There is a team of INSET teacher trainers in Krasnoyarsk (Russia) and my part of our course is lesson planning. We meet 4 times a year for a week with reflective tasks between the sessions and the final outcome is the project development. We still have handouts (about 8 pages every session) and input as an obligatory part. I just wonder whether we one day will come to something close to your findings.

I think your work sounds very interesting and collaborative - of course, the paperwork can be reduced but what I like about what you describe is the collaborative learning and tasks.
Best wishes to you and your colleagues!

Hi Izzy and Anthony,
Finally seen this after missing it at IATEFL. Just to say I found it incredibly inspiring and beautifully presented. Haven't worked on a CELTA for over four years now (mainly because of feeling strightjacketed by the system) but this has inspired me to look into it again.
Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick,
Thank you very much for the positive feedback! We made these changes to avoid having to do what you did 4 years ago so please do come back to the fold - we need you!
All the best,
Anthony
