Teacher appraisal observations: how to make them work for you - Amanda Howard
Teachers teach, therefore in order to assess their abilities it seems reasonable to assume that pedagogic practice should be the subject of evaluation. Accordingly, appraisal observations are a common method of teacher evaluation, and, in some parts of the world, their success or otherwise is directly related to hiring and firing. As such, these observations often inspire fear in the individual who is going to be observed, and may prompt concerns in those who will be carrying out the appraisal. There are a myriad of things that can go awry during this process, and it helps both observer and observed to be aware of these in order to gain the most from the experience.
This session is based on the results of Doctoral research, and is relevant to teachers, supervisors and educators who take part in appraisal observation. The workshop format will encourage participants to relate findings to their own experience, so that they can ensure that when an appraisal observation takes place they are appropriately situated to make it a positive experience for all those involved.
