Hello everyone

I am looking for some ideas for the Pearson Longman signature event that is happening on the Friday at Harrogate.

The title of the event (which is a panel discussion/ debate) is 'Responding to the needs of generation Y'.

When considering how we should teach young learners who have grown up with the internet, it might be useful to flip the question around and ask; "What can I learn from them in an attempt to engage them in the classroom?"

Perhaps one answer to this question lies with new media. During the Pearson Longman we are going to have a special look at online video - perhaps the latest big player to arrive on the scene.

So this is my question: How can we make use of online video in an attempt to get to know our young students and thus optimize learning?

Hope to hear some of your ideas

Thanks
Jamie :-)

By the way, information about the event (time, other panelists, etc) can be found here:

Hi Jamie,

as well as being a teacher, I am a journalist writing on EFL topics et al. Below is an article I wrote for the English Language Gazette (ELG) about classroom software called TurningPoint. It's often used nowadays in kids' classes and for me is a great use of technology as it forces the wallflowers to get involved. Actually, that's something of a misnomer as all the kids love it and so there's no actual "forcing" going on!

Let me know if you have any problems accessing the article, and I'll try to get it to you another way.

best

Hi Jamie

I produce short videos/slideshows+audio for YLs - you can find some here: http://younglearners.eslreading.org/funfacts/slideshows.html

I also have this Songs page for very young learners, where I uses short Disney clips with accompanying activities:http://englishforyounglearners.org/songs/songs.html

Can fill you in on the technical stuff (fairly basic and largely using Vimeo, Garageband and IPhoto) if that helps.

One issue you might wish to address is the use of filters on college servers - often all YouTube stuff is blocked, for example. This can affect student productions, too - Blogger, which is often used to host video, can be similarly affected.

Best of luck in your presentation

Thanks for sharing your links Kieran, did you share it on twitter as well - there are lots of YL teachers on there that might be interested in the videos.
