  • Part 1
Click here to watch a video clip of Fiona Bartels-Ellis giving an overview of how the British Council approaches EO+D.

Ms Bartels-Ellis introduces the British Council’s Framework. It begins with a focus on the three strands of diversity: the legal, moral and business case.

Many organisations will focus on different dimensions of difference; The British Council focuses on seven: sexual identity; gender; religion or belief; ethnicity; age, disability; work-life balance. She describes how the British Council engages in these through the Framework

  • Part 2
Don’t miss part two where Ms Bartels-Ellis details the seven drivers behind the agenda for EO+D in ELT. She also outlines the ten challenges we face and asks which of them we would rate as our top three.

Ms Bartels-Ellis continues to describe the British Council’s response to these challenges, the “mainstreaming” activity. The tools include: The EO+D Handbook for Teachers, Diversity Assessment Framework (DAF), Monitoring, Equality Impact Assessment & INSETT materials.

Monitoring of EO+D is a legal requirement for many organisations. Many are challenged. Who are out teachers? who are we retaining? What are their experiences at work?

  • Part 3
Part three concerns Equality Impact Assessment which is another tool in the British Council’s repertoire. It gives the British Council an opportunity to review the way they do things; allows the British Council to identify and address potential problems before they have negative impact and adds another level of risk assessment.

The INSETT Programme is a network wide programme which allows teachers understand how the EO+D issues are ‘real’ for them. The programme asks teachers to look at the world through the customers’ eyes, to take a customer journey and see what adjustments are necessary.
