Closing plenary session by Claudia Ferradas

Presented By Claudia Ferradas

Session Details

In a famous tango composed by Enrique Santos Discépolo in 1948, “Cafetín de Buenos Aires”, a young boy finds himself outside a café, looking in and wishing he could enter that forbidden world, that longed-for space he craves to belong to.

Similarly, our learners often find themselves outside looking in, wishing they could belong to the world they learn about in their textbooks. Standing on the periphery, as if looking through a glass pane, they learn about and long for the centre, a “first world” that is often out of reach and expresses itself in English.

Can our choice of materials and approaches allow our students to come into contact with the world on the other side of the glass with an attitude of interest and openness - but without an underlying feeling of inferiority? Can English language learning empower learners to look at themselves and their own culture from the outside as well, taking a critical stance and developing ways of expressing their own identities in the target language? In short, how can learners profit from the enriching experience of coming into contact with otherness by reflecting on their own values and identity and on the construction of their self-image?

This presentation will explore some answers to these questions derived from putting into contact materials from diverse cultures and media, from comics to literary classics, from folk tales to V-logs, from rap to tango –an encounter which challenges presuppositions on what materials and contents to use in ELT classes.

Hello Claudia,

I want to congrats you because your conference was so interesting and entertaining that I was amazed. I really enjoyed listening to you singing as your voice is very sweet. I mostly agree with you when you said that the focus is put too much on the others and too little on the self.

Thank you,

Maricel from Arrecifes, a teacher to be.

Dear Claudia Ferradas,

This was an excellent session which has enchanted us all. You have put us  "in the mood of your melody", definitely.

We have enjoyed the appropriate material selection, your ways of exploring it, the focus on self and otherness, your sharing of enriching identity experiences. We have learnt a lot from your versatility (as usual). Thank you very much indeed.

Look forward to seeing you again in Lisbon at the APPI Conference very soon.

Just amazing, as usual.  Thank you Claudia for being so generous every time you make a presentation.  I'm just starting to blog with my students in order to enhance motivation and make their learning meaninful.  At the same time, it is my intention to research on the effects of the use on-line resources on foreign language acquisition.  Your  plenary session will be of great help for my work.  I'll go back to it again and again while exploring such interesting resources.  The closing story to your talk was really moving.  Thank you and everybody who has made this Conference possible, especially for the possibility to follow it on line.  Cristina Reboredo from Banfield, Argentina.
