The Writing Workshop
Presented By Hania Bociek, Peter Grundy, Kevin Parker (facilitators)
Session Details
The Writing Workshop
The aim of The Writing Workshop is to try and produce an Art-based resource book for teachers in two days. Here's how it works:
- Simply come along to Room 107, 42 Park Place, at any time between 10.00 and 18.00 on Thursday or Friday, where there'll be a facilitator on hand who'll explain a little more about the project and give you a template to work with
- You'll find all the materials you need and lots of stimulating ideas, including several based on paintings in the Gallery - you can of course add to these yourself if inspiration strikes
- Choose between getting to work right away or talking your ideas through with other delegates. If you feel like getting down to work, you'll find three PCs in the room
- If you succeed in writing an activity, you can leave it with the facilitator. Alternatively, you can work on it after the Conference and send it to us by email on or before Monday 27 April
- If we succeed in producing a sufficient number of good quality activities during the Conference, we'll try and get them published in book form. If this happens, you'll be consulted at every stage and, should we be offered a contract, you'll be asked to agree the terms before we proceed.
When: 10.00-18.00 Thursday and Friday - drop in at any time during these two days
Where: when you come out of the Museum, turn left into Park Place - 42 is on the right two minute's walk away
Who: the facilitators are Hania Bociek, Peter Grundy and Kevin Parker
To submit your activity: either leave it with the facilitator in 42 Park Place or send it on or before 27 April to all three of the following addresses - hania.bociek@bluewin.ch, k.parker@unn.ac.uk, peteriatefl@btinternet.com
The reward: a wonderfully creative experience (and the possibility that your activity might find its way into a resource book for teachers). And all this is absolutely free thanks to the generous sponsorship of the University of Cardiff!

Dear Delegate, Friday - our
Dear Delegate,
Friday - our last day in The Writing Workshop and Kevin's left to go to another conference in Manchester, but this is the message he posted yesterday - still very useful today. Peter
This writing workshop is not only about creating activities using art in the English language classroom but also interacting with the exhibits in the National Museum Cardiff; accessible at http://museumwales.ac.uk/en/art/online. Here then are some 'go and find' activities you may like to do either as part of your week here in Cardiff or online .
1. Choose a signature painting from the collection at the National Museum Cardiff which you think best represents the IATEFL Conference and write a brief justification for your choice.
2. Find a 'painting of the day'.
3. Choose an image which best represents you and tell us why.
4. Select images which you think best illustrate any theme of your choice. This could be Cardiff, teaching English, etc
5. What are they saying? Choose an image with people in it and put words into their mouths. Likewise you might want to put thoughts into their heads.
For some of the above ideas you may wish to find a postcard reproduction and exhibit this with your written justification on the message wall at 42 Park Place. Alternatively, if you do this online include the direct URL to the image with your comments.
Friend and Colleagues
Friend and Colleagues everywhere - just to say that Hania and I had a very positive conversation with a publisher yesterday and we're hoping that if we produce good enough materials, we may be able to get them published. So this is to invite anyone who's subscribing to Cardiff Online whether or not you're attending the physicia conference too, to let us have your activities by 27 April - it would be great to be able to publish a book written by authors from around the world who'd never met except in this forum. Thanks! Peter
PS Just to add that we will have this page up all day Thur and Fri, so if you're accessing the session remotely, you can send us a message and may get a reply in real time if anyone in The Writing Workshop cares to respond.
Hi Everyone Just to tell you
Hi Everyone
Just to tell you that I've been to the Writing Workshop this morning and we had a very productive and interesting activity writing brainstorming and ideas discussion around a table full of postcards of wonderful painitngs from the National Museum of Wales - which is just acroos the road.
If you have the opportunity to drop by this afternoon, by all means do it. if you are following us just online post your questions and comments here about this idea of developing ELT activities based on paintings.
Cheers - Chris
