Tribute session
Presented By Facilitated by Christine Coombe and Peter Grundy
Session Details
This is the description of this session as printed in the Conference Programme: This tribute session is an opportunity to remember colleagues who've died during the year since the last conference. If you've lost a colleague or former colleague, you'll have an opportunity to say a few words in their memory and, if you wish, to bring along a memento (book, teaching materials, etc.). Or you may just want to come to the session to hear about colleagues who are no longer with us, and perhaps to add any memories you may have.
Up until last year, we have occasionally held a tribute session to remember a particularly distinguished colleague who'd died during the course of the year since the previous Conference. Last year, following a member's suggestion, for the first time we held a tribute session for any colleague who'd died during the year since the previous Conference and who a delegate wished to speak about. The delegates who attended that session, 20-25 in number, felt that it was a very worthwhile and appropriate contribution to the Conference and for that reason we're holding a tribute session again this year.
Three delegates have let us know in advance of the session that they'd like to speak about a colleague. The colleagues we'll be remembering are
El Tayeb Salih, the distinguished Sudanese novelist, who Amna Bedri will speak about
James Jackson, who'll be remembered by his colleague at Stevenson College, Michael Jenkins
and Elliot Judd, a past President of TESOL, who Christine Coombe will speak about.
There may well be other colleagues who delegates who come to the session want to remember too. We anticipate that the tributes will be celebratory and that the inevitable sadness we feel will be accompanied by the pleasure of remembering our colleagues at their best.
If you are a Cardiff Online delegate who won't be coming to the Conference, please feel free to write a few lines about any colleague of yours whose recent loss you would like to record in the ‘comment' section below. We all know how important it is to perpetuate the memory of those who are no longer with us, and the IATEFL Conference Committee very much hope that you'll take this opportunity to add your tribute or to comment on any tribute any other delegate adds.
The session will be held from15.20-16.05 GMT on Friday, 3 April, should you wish to think of a former colleague at this time.
