The right reading level

This workshop will explore ways to ensure young learners (6-12 years) are reading at the right level at their stage in second or additional language development. This workshop is based on 5 years longitudinal research into ways of promoting literacy skills using semantic, graphophonic and syntactic reading strategies. Discussion on extensive reading and gender preferences for fiction or non-fiction.

About Wendy Arnold

 

Wendy Arnold taught at a government Hong Kong primary school for 15 years. She is a freelance teacher trainer, author and specialist in reading for young learner literacy.

She has trained teachers in Hong Kong, China, Korea, India, the Middle East and Europe. She has also written a coursebook ‘Magic' (OUP) in Hong Kong which is in its 2nd edition, as well as co-written a coursebook in Saudi Arabia (Macmillan). Her research interests have included using projectwork and extensive reading and  she is currently researching a longitudinal study in Hong Kong using a graded reading scheme (summer 2009 will be the 6th year).

Wendy was the e-discussion moderator for the IATEFL YLT Sig and is now the joint co-ordinator.
