Good language student, better language teacher!

Presented By Fred Tarttelin

Session Details

Good language student, better language teacher!
I have been attending weekly French classes which are part of our staff Personal Development Programme. Not surprisingly, the experience impacted significantly on my teaching. This talk describes how I found myself re-appraising approaches to language teaching and learning that I had come to take for granted since the time I first started teaching EFL in the early 1980s.

About Fred Tarttelin

I have been working at the International Centre,Oxford Brookes University since 1998. Although my main area of responsibility was originally the coordination of the Certificate in English Language Studies (CELS) Course, I am now also Assistant Manager for the English for University Studies (EUS) Programme, as well as Coordinator and Personal Tutor for Japanese Year Abroad students.

After early studies at the Royal Academy of Music and the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama, I worked professionally as an actor and musician for a number of years. However, I eventually, ended up in Barcelona working for the British Council, at first as an EFL teacher but later I took on some managerial responsibilities. In addition, I regularly developed and carried out teacher training workshops and also acted as a Cambridge Examiner for First Certificate, Advanced and Proficiency Exams.
At this time, as well as being involved in special projects at a number of Spanish universities I also did some teacher training work for the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. Frequently invited to present papers at conferences and teaching conventions, I had articles on teaching and methodology published in a variety of journals.

Since returning to the UK in 1998, (after living abroad for almost 18 years) I have completed a BA (Hons.) in literature and an MA in applied linguistics, to add to the list of other certificates and diplomas acquired over the years. Two current research areas of interest are problem areas encountered by international students in reading in English, and classroom dynamics in mixed ability, multinational groups.

Passionately fond of theatre and music (now as a member of an audience rather than a performer) I also enjoy swimming, walking and a certain amount of keep fit at the university sports centre.
