The ELT Case for Mainstreaming Equality and Diversity

Presented By David Valente

Session Details

This talk extends beyond the moral, legal and business reasons for equality and diversity in the workplace by presenting the specific ELT case. We will explore five key areas of ELT within the framework of equality and diversity and how to attend to these when in the classroom. The focus is on practical ideas which teachers can readily use.

About David Valente

David Valente has 11 years ELT experience and is a tutor for the Cambridge ESOL CELTYL / CELTA awards. He is currently a Senior Trainer on a CLIL project with the British Council Qatar and the Qatar Supreme Education Council. His special interests include whole language learning and intercultural dialogue in ELT.

He recently developed an Equal Opportunity and Diversity Handbook for English Teachers which provides practical advice and ideas on how to become more aware and integrate aspects of equal opportunity and diversity into ELT. The handbook is a showcase of good practice from a variety of teaching contexts around the world, where colleagues have successfully embedded equality and diversity in English language teaching.

The talk draws on part of this handbook - the ELT Case for equality and diversity and delegates will receive hard copies at the British Council Signature Event on Thursday evening. If you are keen to familiarise yourselves with the content beforehand, you can download the handbook at:
