A constructivist approach to background reading on CELTA courses

Short, initial training courses such as CELTA have been criticised for not getting trainees to engage with theory and test it against their educational beliefs in the light of practice. A mini-key readings scheme was introduced on our CELTA course in an attempt to deal withthis shortcoming. I will report on the innovation and its potential for trainee learning.

Briony is the Münchner Volkshochschule (Germany) CELTA project manager, a CELTA course tutor and assessor, a DELTA local tutor, and a TKT tutor. She also runs in-service teacher training courses and is a guest teacher trainer at Norwich Institute of Language Education. Briony edits the IATEFL annual volume Conference Selections. She has given presentations at many international conferences including IATEFL Annual Conference and English Teaching Professional Live.
