Exploiting non-formal language learning opportunities on study abroad programmes

Presented By Philip Hoare

Session Details

This paper explores non-formal second language learning opportunities reported by Hong Kong students during semester-long study abroad in Britain, Canada and Australia. It analyses instances reported as fruitful, attempts to explain what characterises these and matches them to stages of acculturation. It considers how, if at all, pre-departure preparation can help students exploit non-formal language learning opportunities while overseas.
