Early literacy practices in TEFL: teacher educators investigate

Presented By Inas Deeb, Valerie Jackar

Session Details

We are conducting a case study on the efficacy of in-service courses for teachers of English to young learners (grades 1-6) who are native speakers of other  languages (predominantly Arabic). In this presentation, we look at three aspects: the learners and teachers in action; concepts of literacy in different social and cultural contexts; our reflections on our own practice as teacher educators.

About Inas Deeb

My experience in TEFL  for the last 16 years has been of great impact on my continuous professional development as English teacher and teacher trainer. For several years I worked as English teacher for the Junior High  school teaching young teenagers to appreciate language learning, and incorporate literacy practices to promote their better language learning. My current work is largely directed to the development and empowerment of teachers' skills in TEFL. In progress, my chief goal is to empower teachers with the means and the support to learn to be self reflective in order to act out on their own teaching practices and empower others as well. At present, I am on sabbatical  in order to complete my doctoral dissertation that investigates the development of children's conception of social categories and its influence on early literacy practices.
