Yuliya's Session Report
Last day
The conference is closing today and I just want to share my general impression about it.
Pop music in EFL classes
Fergal Kavanagh talked about using songs in EFL classes, especially with young learners. Visit his site www.tuneintoenglish.com to see some interesting stuff and... downloadable worksheets!!!
Sit, relax, and let the learners do the work
Michael Berman (Oxford House College, London)
Have you ever tried story-telling with your class? A really good thing to do. But be sure you do it right not to mess it up! Storytelling enhances speaking skills and you can practice both fluency and accuracy. The weaker your class is the more structured the task should be. If this topic really thrills you, why don't you visit the author's site? http://www.thestoryteller.org.uk/
Sessions on using technology in ELF teaching
Actually there's been a lot talk on using technology in EFL teaching. Linda Roth from University of Sheffield made a presentation on using MOLE to complement her face-to-face classes. The attendees were presented with a number of students' and teachers' views on using this technology. Students usually feel much better about it then teachers. Probably because Ss are much technology-friendlier and teachers realize that using a new technology often presupposes lots of extra preparation work.
Really teaching the four skills
The author of several EFL course books Paul Seligson gave some pretty interesting ideas on how to teach your students the four skills -, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Will it surprise you to know that people in their everyday life spend much more time listening and speaking than reading and writing. So, why do we, teachers, spend most of our time teaching our students reading and writing. The presenter talked about separation of these skills.
Creating interesting language exercises, and making language exercises interesting
This presentation made by the well-known Penny Ur, author of a number of books that I really appreciate, was a real ‘treat of the day'. How often do you complain that your students are not responding properly, they are reluctant to fulfil the task you are giving them? Who do you blame in this situation? Most teachers will blame their students. But you yourselves, have you ever tried to fulfil those tasks? Try. You are very likely to be bored and reluctant to respond. We tried several activities in class.
Making an impression: meaningful and fun activities
This talk was presented by a young Korean high school teacher named Jiyoung Lee.
The big pedagogical picture on the Internet
We go further into exploring the Internet for TEFL needs. Brendan Wightman from Cambridge University Press delivered this highly informative and vivid presentation. The internet has changed greatly since its first day, lots of webpages have become dynamic and interactive, which encourages learning and maintains learner's interest. Browse these websites for lots of resorces to use:
Fun web publishing resources for collaborative projects and tasks.
Another talk touching upon learner autonomy issue and using the Internet in TEFL, produced by Ann Foreman (British Council Center, Bilbao, Spain).
A lot was said on moving away from 'I teach you learn' model and encouraging learner autonomy. The attendees learned how to create Voki characters, which works particularly great with teaching pronunciation.
Enhancing listening skills through cooperative audiovisual comprehension tasks using Moodle
This presentation was delivered by Maria del Mar Suarez Vilagren from University Barcelona. The talk was a lot about blended learning, e.i. combining class instruction with the Internat based tasks. How can teachers comlement class learning with extra-activities done by the students using Moodel and several Web 2.0 multemedia tools such as You Tube.
