I can't but share with you briefly how we worked with a short story in David Hill's workshop because I found it truly engaging. Having done a warm-up activity in which we had to find a link between the words presented to us (they all were negative and had something to do with something you do to people, for example, tease or make fun of), we were split into groups of 6, with each of us receiving one page of the story we had to read and then share what we read with the rest of the group. Teachers being teachers, we thought we had to restore the stories sequence and work from there. Yes, it was part of the task: we had to figure out the connections between the characters, establish the events (and their order if possible) as well as the locations. But actually the purpose of us working together was to engage us with the text more, which surprisingly for me was much greater than I could have thought. I really enjoyed myself and will for sure try to work on some short story with my students in the described way. I'm curious to see how it will work in my classroom. I think one of the keys to success is to find an appropriate story. :) What's your experience in working with fiction with your students?
