Natalia's Session Report
Time to say ‘Good bye'
The time has come - much too soon - to say good-bye. It has been a week that will stay in my memory as the time full of discoveries and reflection. It has also been a week that I'll remember for warm and appreciative mood that filled the air in every single room I found myself in. Being at the conference in the role of the roving reporter gave me a chance to approach people more easily and look at what was taking place around me from different perspectives, that of a fellow teacher and that of a reporter.
Evening Event: A Portrait of Wales with David, Hilary and Ben Crystal
Attending the performance was a truly enjoyale and absolutely hilarious experience! For me different faces and images of Wales and the Welsh came alive through the eyes of Welsh, Irish, English and American authors whose witty observations were shared with us by Hilary, David and Ben Crystal. It was done in style and good taste. Bravo!

Danny Whitehead The Elephant in the Corner: Controversial Content in the Classroom
Abortion, obesity, HIV/AIDS, religion, prostitution... Can you guess what these have in common? These are controversial issues which can emerge in discussions class or can be brought up for discussion by the teacher. There are several factors that make an issue controversial and can be identified by the following characteristics:
Barry Tomalin The FIVE C's of Culture
It has been one of the most interesting sessions for me so far both for its content and atmosphere. Dealing with different aspects of culture when learning a language in all sorts of contexts has become an indispensable component of the learning process.
Hugh Dellar Putting our words to work: rethinking teacher talking time
Do you remember what we were taught at college about what should the ratio be between students' and teachers' talking time? Yes, sustain theirs for as long as possible, while keeping ours to a minimum. Do you try to follow this advice or try to find excuses not to? In his brilliantly delivered presentation Hugh Dellar has demonstrated that under certain conditions we can, actually, should stretch the time we speak in class.
Dafne Gonzalez Teacher training in virtual worlds
Are you on Second Life? Do you have an avatar, maybe two or even three? More and more educators are teaching their classes in Second Life. Is it similar to or different from teaching web-based courses this is what Dafne Gonzalez presentation was about. Basic differences lie in the content, teaching methodology and level of interaction. For example, on web-based courses you usually deal with people who have real names; you can identify them by their photos and see them with the webcam, for example.
A personal story
Why do we attend conferences? To share and to learn, to analyse and reflect, to meet new people and get together with old colleagues and friends. I had the most extraordinary meeting today which surprised me once and again how small the world is. I have just completed an e-moderators training course at Consultants-E and known my tutors will be at the conference. But can you imagine what I learned when I met Kristina Smith (E-Consultants) here? Read on to learn.
My father is a physicist and worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory (NY, USA) for several years. Guess what?
Andy Hockley (Hox and Eris, SRL) Managing conflict in language teaching organizations
Is it possible to stay conflict-free at your workplace? Is it actually the best possible situation? What I have learned from A. Hockley's presentation is that actually conflicts can be beneficial if they are functional, and the group involved in the conflict (even if there are only a couple of people involved) is self-critical and is ready for innovation. Equally bad are situations when the level of conflict is low or if there is none as well as when it is high.
IATEFL’a Social Events
The evening activities at the conference have been superb! On the first day a Welsh Voice Choir got us immersed in beautifully performed traditional songs. Choir music always leaves me mesmerized and this was not an exception, but what was special this time is a Welsh taste to them. Superb!
The same day you could learn to dance traditional Welsh dances accompanied by the Twmpath Dawns Band (a Welsh Ceilidth band). I was amazed at how many people joined! It was great!
David A. Hill Read all about it! Short story deals with social issue!
I can't but share with you briefly how we worked with a short story in David Hill's workshop because I found it truly engaging. Having done a warm-up activity in which we had to find a link between the words presented to us (they all were negative and had something to do with something you do to people, for example, tease or make fun of), we were split into groups of 6, with each of us receiving one page of the story we had to read and then share what we read with the rest of the group. Teachers being teachers, we thought we had to restore the stories sequence and work from there.
