Hi all,

I would like to draw your attention to the live IATEFL live session which is going to take place on Thursday 02 April, 18.30 - 21.00 GMT, with Lindsay Clanfield in charge.  You can check your time here: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock , and you can watch it here: http://iatefl.britishcouncil.org/2009/live-sessions

(just a quick reminder for your convenience)

As BE teachers, we face the necessity to train our students to master the art of delivery, namely the presentations. Pecha Kucha is another exciting of doing so, it is a must to see for teachers, especially ESP ones. This year the event is called "A Magical Mystery Tour of ELT", and  the organisers promise us many topics covered during the whole session as each speaker will present only for 6 minutes.

Personally I have found out about this new technique at the training course from 'The Consultants-E", and it certainly deserves attention. Let's see how it is run and talk about its benefits later on and your impressions and previous knowledge about it!

Looking forward to the future event and your comments. Don't miss! We can discuss the event later on in this forum.

Anastasia.

Great idea, Anastasia!

Do you know if the session is also being recorded in case we have to miss it? And what does Pecha Kucha actually mean? (something Welsh?)

Hi Diana,

As far as I know the name of the presentation comes from the Japanese language, and it seems to me that the live video sessions are being recorded, so hopefully we will be able to view the event later. I am experiencing some technical problems with watching it live, so I will also wait for the recorded version. I managed to see only some bits of one part of the event, and it seems already to be quite a hit already!

Hope to hear from you and the others about the session soon,

Anastasia.

Hi Anastasia and Diana,

I've actually watched Pecha Kucha during live session and enjoyed it a lot. I haven’t got a clear idea of it before. I’ve just read an article about it but I’ve never experienced it alive. I liked the first presentation by Nicky Hockly the most but generally they were all great. I think it is a really good thing for training presentation skills. Speakers need to be flexible, they have to keep to the point all the time-)) They need to be really well-prepared not to lose pace. This way of presenting material is certainly better for listeners too, not to get bored or something.

So, what do you think about Pecha Kucha as a technique? Have anyone used it for teaching presentation skills?

Hi Nataliya,

It's great to hear from you again. I am still waiting for the recording... Personally I find this technique as a very successful one, as it really doesn't give a chance for the audience to get bored, disciplines the presenter and enables to fit lots of information into the limited time. So I think it should be mastered and put into practice of teaching BE communication skills.

What about the others? What do you think of it as a technique for BE?

Anastasia
