Hi everyone,
Welcome to the Literature, Media and cultural studies at Cardiff online. I am Mostafa MOUHIBE and I will be one of the moderators for this forum during this conference. I ma an M.A holder in English literature, an EFL senior high school and TEI (Teacher Education Institute) member in Boston and UME (University of the Middle East) alumni. I am also a Global Mind member (BBC).
I wish all teachers, trainers and material writers could find insightful and thought-provoking issues in LMCS forum ;)
Nice to meet you here Chris :)

Hello colleagues,
Much pleased I am finding myself again while navigating in this useful amd most cheerful website. Well! My name is Rachid ACIM. I am a teacher of English language teaching teens, whose age waver between 15 & 16. I am based in Beni Mellal, a beautiful city which is going to host MATE's (Moroccan Association of Teachers of English) national conference this year about "Effective Classroom Practices in Language Education". I am also a postgraduate student following Master Studies in the Master of Translation, Languages and Informatics, currently, working my thesis about "The Translation of the Political Discourse". what is more is that I am so much enamoured of poetry and I have published my first collection of poems entitled "Tunes on My Guitar", tunes of which have a face in reality and behind which there is a real long story.
Frankly, this year marks a serious metamorphosis in my life since I joined this club of international experts and researchers whose sole aim is the promotion of education in all the parts of the world. This is not actually a privilege, but rather a duty and a heavy responsibility, for a herd of challenges are waiting us carr out our careers in the best circumstances. As a moderator, I am so much zealous and very disposed, I should say, to contribute by the possible means I uphold in order to make of this memorable event a real sucess. Thus, I think that we've got to usher in work and to start discussing whatever presentation as I do believe that what makes a topic interesting is not the topic itself, but what can you say about the topic and the huge questions that arouse in the minds of the potential public. Everyone should bear in mind that we are meeting here neither to trade nor to sell or to purchase merchandise but to exchange ideas and our reflections about some problematic issues in teaching and in the learning processes. Such good initiatives is what we need now in our countries because they allow you to think seriously of how to dispose of classroom problems and thereby to think of effective techniques by dint of which you can enhance learning.
I am therefore so proud of making the acquaintance of (wo)men whose heads glow silver due to age, to cultivation and, most importantly, due to theior dedication to scientific researching in many fieldworks. To them and to the Crdiffian Teamwork, I say "Big HI", meanwhile wishing for them and for you a strong health and a life full of joy and many good achievements.
N.B: sorry, self-introduction, I think, should come here.
Rachid

Hi you all!
I think I went the wrong way and introduced myself somewhere else- but, to make it up I´ll do it here too.
I am María Graciana, from Argentina. teacher and translator, mother of 4 (no minor issue), amateur actress and head of a language institute in Trenque Lauquen, Argentina.
This is my first IATEFL Online conference as a Moderator for the Literature, Media and Cultural Studies Forum. I have already introduced a topic (poetry), which has been very rewarding for me as a teacher and found out many of you also share similar experiences.
I´m glad to be able to learn and contribute in some way.
Cheers,
Graciana
Hi Everyone,
My name is Christine van Gool (Dutch spelling Christien). I have been a teacher of English since 1980.
At the moment I am teaching secondary education at a college for adults (18+).I have been active for our teachers' association for a long time: organizing conferences, being an editor for the magazine, writing columns etc.
Further I work on teaching materials for extensive reading.
What I am intrigued about as a teacher of English: when do students know enough about the language?
Welcome Christien! Nice to see you here! :)
Well, this is an intriguing question indeed. I wonder if there is ever an *enough* and if so, what deternimes it...mmmmm Got to think about it mmmmm
Looking forward to everyone's takes on this.
Cheers - Chris
Hi Chris! Welcome to the IATEFL Online Conference!
I am very glad to see you here as one of the Conference Moderators for the Literature, Media and Cultural Studies Forum.
Last week I intended to address you a nice welcome but due to other activities it just happened today. As you have certainly noticed, I have already joined the "Poetry in the classroom" Discussion, which has been very lively, useful, and really exciting! I love contacting Colleagues from around the world to exchange knowledge and learn from their cultures.
This afternoon I shall be browsing other forums, and looking forward to communicating with you as regularly as possible. Keep up your interesting activities.
Wishing you the best. With warm regards,
Maria
Hi Christien & Everyone!
Welcome to the 2009 IATEFL Online Conference!
I have joined this interesting e-platform on 11th March, I think, and by then it happened my introductory post.
Well, dear Christien, I have thought to address you because you must be a very active professional. Moreover, most of my teaching career (as an EFL teacher) has been at the secondary level, as you currently are.
As for your Question "When do students know enough about the language?", it seems to me it is not that easy to provide a categorical answer. In my view, it is a very subjective context. For example, some learners who leave the secondary school think they have acquired all the appropriate, necessary language structures, vocabulary and skills to face the world of English beyond the school environment. But the point is once they apply for a job, e.g., on having to be present at an Interview, they might be confronted with some language problems (from lack of vocabulary to accurate and fluent speaking skills).
While travelling, both for a personal purpose and for business, there might be expected some difficulties as well. In a nutshell, what I mean is this: just before any authentic situational context are most learners more likely to draw this conclusion: "Despite having acquired what we thought it was enough, we still have much to learn!" So, practice (we include the 4 basic skills) can lead to more accuracy and fluency. But we think any language requires sustainability on a daily basis. Is it "enough", dear Christien?
Looking forward to learning from you and our expert Colleagues at the Conference.
Best regards,
Maria
Hi Everyone
Welcome to you Maria! :)
I wouldn't dare to say that there is a point that you know enough about the language. What is enough in one circumstance and for one specific purpose may be far from being the minimum in another. I don't believe we can think about language in such absolutist terms. It would be the same as asking when you have already read enough - the answer would be 'never' because there is always something to discover or rediscover.
On the other hand, I would like to draw a distinction between knowing the language and knowing about the language. And notice the preposition in Christien's question. Knowing about the language can be useful, especially to adult learners, but certainly students' knowledge in areas such as syntax, morphology, semantics can be more limited to their practical needs.
What do you think?
Cheers - Chris
Hi Chris
Thank you for your attention to my reply to Christien's Question.
On starting that post I said:"It seems to me it is not that easy to provide a categorical answer."; "it is a very subjective context" I confess I wouldn't mean to tackle the "Question" in "absolutist terms". Far from it! When I had used those inverted commas I had just intended to quote some learners' experience with such thoughts, even presenting these sensible words...: "... we still have much to learn!"
Of course I do agree with your view when you say: " there is always something to discover and rediscover." And this really applies to all of us, I think.
I have also thought of young adult learners with my examples: applying for a job interview; travelling for a personal purpose and/ or for business. Christien's students are 18+.
I'm sorry if I have not been clear enough with my thoughts. Your criticism will always be welcome.
Cheers
Maria
Hi all! Hi Chris,

Cheers;)
Oooops (I guess this thread is for introductions. Isn't it? ;)
Dear All,
Perhaps I should explain my question: "when do students know enough about the language?" What I meant was: when do you as a teacher know that you have done your job right? This seems to me the most difficult thing to define for language teachers. Of course you can say: all my students have passed the test but they might have passed that test anyway. It is nothing to do with your teaching.
If you are a history teacher, it is often much clearer what you have to teach and what students should know at the end. With a language you can never tell whether it is enough.
Have I explained myself better now?
PS Why do I get this strange lettertype? Where can I change this??
