How do Teachers and Managers ensure Professionalism?
In another thread the question came up as to how the external teaching environment can convince the students of the quality of the teaching establishment.
What is the importance of things like the dress code, the state of the classroom, the "glossiness" of the printed materials in comparison with the actual teaching?
What do Managers, what Teachers think about all this?
What makes for a professional working environment?
Please commment!
Diana

Dear Heather,
That really sounds encouraging! I suppose what we must now ask yourselves is how to get across to prospective students what the "approach" of the school really is, the essence beneath the trappings
All those ELT Managers (or Leaders) out there - how do YOU do it?
Teachers - How do you KNOW that you are teaching in a "good", professional school??
Diana
It is difficult, on one hand you want a nice environment to teach in, an environment to show students or prospective students that you care about them, but I agree, we do need to avoid the 'glossy' presentation at times in order to focus more on the humanistic substance behind that gloss. It's a balance. I work in a London language school and personally, I do think that language schools need to put pinboards on walls for space for students work and notices, more than the stereotypical pictures of St Paul's Cathedral or a Red London Bus. Maps are important too, of the UK and the world so students can tell each other about home countries and plan holidays etc... It sounds simple but it is something I really noticed lacking in the language school where I work. When nothing but 'stereotype pictures' adorn the walls it's depressing for teachers and students.
Hi Diana,
everything depends on background and IQ of a teacher from the point of speciality and managment ,
if a teacher is creative,he / she can give knowledge to learners only with a chalk without CALL,
if a teacher is not creative ,nothing helps to educate learners including Education know - how and Hitech.
The indicator of a good university is that if there are demands to the specialists of this or that university
from the side of society and graduaters are recognized and invited to world labour market as good
specialists who are able to make decisions .
Best regards,
Fazira

Hi Diana
I think that the professionalism of the teachers/management and the product/learning ethos offered are of prime importance.
For example, several years ago, in a provincial town in the UAE, expatriate (Arab or Western) parents mainly had a choice for the education of their children between two schools, both British curriculum - one, part of an international chain, with modern buildings, great activities programme, young (mainly Brit) teachers, a focus on success, fantastic sports facilities (including swimming pool), a highly structured curriculum and exam programme, great success rate, library, tec, etc - and a small, old school where the classrooms were sort of mud bungalows but highly decorated with kids work, construction of newer facilities was just starting, no sports facilities, old-fashioned art/science facilities, older Brit teachers and management, no proper grounds or playground, a caring-sharing environment, collaborative class activities.. Yes, you've guessed - the parents who enrolled their kids at the first school were invariably soon on the waiting list for the second school!
So, forget the trappings, it's about people, teachers, and a humanistic approach.
