In this day and age, one practical skill is giving oral presentations on academic topics of a student's choice, narrowing the topic, researching it on the internet or in the library, taking useful notes, and synthesizing information in a substantive, coherent and clearly delivered individual oral presentaion, which may include a Power Point presentation. The length is usually between 8-12 minutes. How about this as a great practical exercise of learner autonomy?

I have had great success with oral presentations and my students have developmed an eagerness to do them, and it has taught them a skill which they will need later on in their careers. Rania

Hi Rania
Well, I think oral presentations are a very productive activity to achieve learner autonomy.
Lots of my students just dedicate time to learn English during class hours. As a result, they just learn what is taught in classes by me. Because of this, one of the activities I apply the most in classes is oral presentation. As students are required to give an 8-10 min presentation, they need more information that the one provided by the teacher. Researchment of the new information results in a widening of my students' knowledge in the target language. This makes them get involved in their process of learning a target language.
