Comics for teaching purpose

Hi mates!
Some months ago I found in Internet some funny stories in pictures without any word. I printed them and brought for my students. I proposed them to make their own stories according to the pictures. I got lots of ideas. All of students wanted to share their vision to the same situation (no wonder: so many men so many minds). I was pleased with their activity because usually only some of them were active at the lesson. I decided to start each of my lessons with such activity to warm up the students. But I am short of such pictures. I'd like to know if someone has an experience in such activity. I would be grateful for any information where I can find some comics in Net.
Best regards
Elena, Ukraine
hi Elena,
One of my former students, she is teacher now, wrote and drew and wrote a wonderful comic based on Metallica´s Enter Sandman, she also wrote with two of her mates a project based on Fears. if you are interested send me an e-mail to maryadelpilar@yahoo.com.ar
cheers
Pilar
Hi Elena and everyone. Using comics sounds really motivating. Pilar can you post the link to your student´s work so that anyone who´s interested can have access? The project sounds marvellous.
Do you think comics can be used in an EAP class as a departure from the usual routine? Do you know any materials that can be used, I mean, comics, films, TV shows, literature that exploit academically relevant topics that may motivated students and make them reflect on (and maybe laught at) academic life?
Best
Andrea
Dear Elena,
your posting reminded me of an old trick we used at an EFL Summer School for otherwise easily distracted Italian teenagers. Get them to make up their own story and illustrate it with photographs. Photo-stories (fumetti) were invented by the Italians and so they didn't need much encouragement to do the task and practice acting out the story in English (and writing down the appropriate speech bubbles for the presentation later).
We used to get the whole thing done in an afternoon, using a one-hour photo-lab.
You might find it harder to adapt this for adult learners, but the interaction between im ages and words should still be very effective.
'Bye for now,
Robert
