Acquisition of Vocabulary & Learner Autonomy
- Login to post comments
Hi,
There is a common core of issues and understanding regarding learner autonomy but the practical English Language Teaching challenge several common assumptions in ELT pedagogy, as we have seen at our questions: WHAT else can be used on this way? Does anyone have any tasks/activities or design principles for fostering learner autonomy that they can share? Does anyone have any tips or techniques for me regarding the fostering of autonomy in the classroom using the target language?
What kinds of practical suggestions, resourses and activities could be integrated into the regular curriculum for acquisition of vocabulary in an autonomous learning environment?

Hi
I think getting students to recognise roots and the verb, adverb, noun, adjective form of words is essential. Does anyone have any practical suggestions as to how we can encourage this word-building approach with learners - and word recognition based on this?
Thanks
Heather
Hi Heather,
I've been having fun with my students by playing with affixes and their names. We have had the Nasserfication of things, they've been unyassered, resalehed and ahmedology has become an important new science along with rashedologists who need to do things mubarakly if they're to be successful. It has been an enjoyable task and the competitive aspect of producing new words has increased the interest in learning the affixes. My favorite was the verb to geohamadify as in using the ground to create Hamads.
